This is a very simple technique that doesn't involve plug-ins or complicated steps, but you must repeat the steps if you wish to change more than one color.
The Color suppression operator is usually used for keying, but we will use to change certain color of the image
Lessons you will learn by using this method:
- You will find that only 50% of the color you selected will work but you will want to increase its tolerance in order to include other degrees of the color.
- You will need to tweak the TANGENTS of the key point you did in the intersection of the vertical and horizontal lines (see graphic below).
Let's begin.
Download the footage from the links in the orange bar above. The folder will be called waterlily and will contain a graphic like the one below that you can use in this exercise as well as a high resolution picture that you can use to follow the steps listed below.
Now follow along with the graphic below or the high resolution graphic that you'll find in your downloaded folder. All the steps are numbered.
Step One: Apply operator: Keying>Color Suppression
Step Two: IN THE VIEWPORT, Pick the color you want to change or remove from image.
Step Three: Activate Hue Shift.
Step Four: Notice the vertical generated line in the Color Suppression Controls graph -- this line locates the just picked color.This is where you'll define what color to shift "from." You can then define the new color in the Hue Shift Target Color chip.
Add key at the intersection point of the generated vertical and hue shift horizontal white line.
Step Five: Drag this point up and the adjacent points out to create a hue shift curve until you reach the new color defined from the hue shift target.
Optional:
Now you can increase or decrease the saturation, luma or RGB degree and suppression of the selected color in one step.
Repeat the previous steps to change a different color using the same operator. You don't need to generate new color suppression operator...
Advantages of this method:
- First of all, it is FREE :)
- Short render time compared with any 3d party plug-in or with the famous way of keying the color and converting to selection....and then applying Color Correction and then remove selection ohhh!!
- 4 steps in one step!! to change 1 color!
What if you have 2 colors to change? You will repeat these steps twice.
Disadvantages of this method:
The only disadvantage is IT IS NOT ANIMATIBLE, so you will be obliged to use your background experience to deal with this issue using edit operator or anything you find easier to morph between colors instead of selected color.
