In this article, CreativeCOW.net leader and filmmaker David Battistella shares a good basic technique for ''FCP- Edit to Tape'' first timers.
|
First off, command "0" opens the sequence settings. Type in 00;58;40;00 as your sequence start time for the final sequence you want to output to tape

Click OK. The next step is to layback one minute of color bars at the head of your sequence.

You then want to place a program slate after the bars for ten seconds.

then put in a two pop at 00:59:58:00

Next you want to set your program start to 01:00;00;00. Type the value 01:00;00;00 in the tap left corner of the timeline to move the position bar to that point in the time line.
Next you want to make sure snapping is on, select all of the program and drag your it to the position bar.
The next step is to open edit to tape.

Select the black and code icon at the top of the window. Beside the Mastering drop down menu.

Click it and you will see this dialog box.

Click OK and enter this value when the next window appears.

Click OK and this will appear. Load your tape.

Click OK and let it record for about a minute or so.
Rewind the tape. Play it back and make sure you recorded black.
Then go to the bottom of the edit to tape window and set the IN TC value. This is the same as your sequence start time. Make sure everything is set to drop frame.

Drag your sequence over the edit to tape window and highlight the purple, edit to tape assemble edit transparent window appears.

Let go of the mouse and the FCP will do its thing. Make sure you check your tape.
You should always set audio levels on your deck before recording as well.
Happy editing to tape!

Comments | | | | David,
My Deck has a RS422 deck control port, how do I hook up the serial cable from the Sony DVCAM DSR-45 deck to my computer? Do I need a special port on my computer? I want to record to a DVCAM tape, how would I go about doing that?
Thanks! | | | | |
| | | | You can try to rs 422 but I am not sure you can send with TC to the DSR 45. If you can not then the only way to do it might be to set the TC to 09:58:30:00 manually and let it rocrd for a minute. Then see if you can do an assemble edit with edit to tape on the deck.
It could be that the DSR 45 does not eccespt TC from the RS422 in which case you can use the printo to video command but you would not have matching TC from the Timline and the tape.

| | | | I saw this tutorial and decided to try it, since I have been looking for a way to export timecode out of FCP. Everything is great, accept on one of the last steps where it says "initialize tape" and you are suppose to put the timecode you want in, I never get that message. It goes from current settings directly to asking me if its okay to black the tape. Is there a certain setting my DVCAM deck needs to be set to?
Thanks! | | | | |
| | | | It could be that your DV deck does not have this feature. This feature is available when you attach an RS422 deck control to Beta, Digibeta, HDCAM, Panasonic vtr's etc.
Some DV decks do not allow you to initiate a TC start time.

Nice tutorial, but you perhaps forget that some of us are completely new to this and don't know how to get (or even what is) a "two pop" (without the aid of google). You take for granted we'll also know where the bars and tones window is (not in help either) or what the slate info should read. Other than that, thanks.
| | | | This method works perfectly, but as soon as my HVX-200 starts recording, the timecode reverts back to 00:00:00.0. Then I get an error message that says "Time code appears to be missing from tape." Same thing happens with Print to Video--although with that it recorded the whole movie with 00:00:00.0 as the timecode!
Has anyone had any success on the HVX?
| | | | | Doesn't the tape need to be striped with the timecode before letting off the recording? by Praveen Kumar 74313430 |
Doesn't the tape need to be striped with the timecode before letting off the recording? I have never mastered any tape till now since I have always worked on a DV set-up...Once, I had to output on a digibeta and I was screwed up badly? If the tape doesn't need to be striped then its great that everything can be controlled from fcp itself.

Actually I do know why it didn't write the timecode correct. Well I don't know why it wrote all 00's.... but at least I do realize that it didn't give me the window after choosing "black and code" to "initialize the tape" and what timecode to start it at.

I have gone through these steps, but the process is halted when I get a message that says it can't find the timecode. The reason it can't find the timecode is because it didn't print any with "black and code". Is there another setting I need to change to get it to write timecode to my tape?
I tried a workaround that was to print timecode WITH my camera (the device I'm using to print to tape with) so that there was timecode for the program to pick up on. But it is still giving me the error, even after it rewinds/fastforwards the tape to where the in point timecode marker is. It quits after reaching the timecode and gives me the error that there is something wrong with the tape's code.
| | | | It can also help to make sure you have mixed down your audio before you start - especially if you are having problems.
Select all of your audio tracks on the timeline, then:
Sequence Menu > Render Only > Mixdown.
| | | | |
| | | | Might want to mention that if you are using an external secondary monitor that you have to change your Video Playback device to the external capture device.
