Stephen, have you used a Mac long? SIT files are BY FAR historically the most popular compressed format on the platform. Stands for StuffIt. StuffIt Expander is available for both Mac and PC and it is a VERY common format among those who work in the creative fields, where Macs are quite common.
SIT is FAR more commonplace than .rar files and while Zip is quickly replacing SIT on the Mac because of built-in support for it in the MacOS today, learn to live with it or don't.
