I'm trying to apply this method to a person running towards the camera. The scaling makes this method impossible. Is there another way of making effects track an object??

Your tutorials are not only great, but quite entertaining. Just letting you know I used the effect for my latest musicvideo for the Swedish band Decadence. The demon face appears at about 4.09, but I used the technique on other places too.
Im at the part where you draw a mask around the face, done that bit but where Andrew uses the mask shape to ajust the mask, i dont have that, mine says mask path, not mask shape.. any help would be great..
