Article Focus:
In this tutorial, Creativecow leader, Greg LaClé demonstrates the creation of volumetric clouds in 3ds max.

Let's start.

start a new file in MAX or VIZ,

1) Create a plane for your ground surface. (CREATE>GEOMETRY/PLANE)

2) Create a big sphere, apply a NORMAL modifier to the sphere (MODIFIER>NORMAL) and select invert. (this is to make sure the sphere is viewable from inside) This big sphere is going to be used as the Blue sky background.

3) Position the sphere halfway, meaning centerpoint should be around the ground plane)

4) Select the Sphere and go into EDIT MESH mode (MODIFIER>EDIT MESH) and click on the VERTICES button, select the half the vertices underneath the ground plane and press delete. (We are basically chopping off the underside of the sphere, cause we don't need it.

5) Select Sphere and apply a spherical UVmap to it. (MODIFIER>UVMAP>SPHERE)

6) Create a gradient map and apply it to the sphere.

7) Now we are going to create the Gizmo apparatus. Create about 15 box gizmo's, all different sizes, different heights and different seeds. The seeds makes sure they are different so we don't get identical volumetric clouds.

8) After creating these we're going to add Volumetric fog to the gizmos, go to RENDERING>ENVIRONMENT and under "ATMOSPHERE" click on "ADD" and add a Volume Fog effect. Set the settings as I have there and select all the boxgizmos from the GIZMO>PICK GIZMO(under VOLUME FOG PARAMETERS).

I always like creating two Volumetric Fog effects, and add different variations to different clouds. You can add more as you please.

9) Finally for an extra nice horizon effect you can add a FOG effect to smooth the horizon.

If you want to animate the Clouds, you can animate all the Gizmo to the direction you want, and Animate the "PHASE" parameter under the VOLUME FOG PARAMETERS. This will animate the volumetric effects of the clouds.

You may need to play with your settings to comply with your design and projects.
I may add a few animations of this tutorial, and also another cloud tutorial using a powerful plugin (Afterburn).

Here's the Max file if you want to have my original file.

If you have any comments please drop me a note. Feel free to ask questions about this technique in the 3ds Max forum at Creativecow.net.
Have fun.

Daniel Simon: Designing Fantasy Vehicles for the Movies

Daniel Simon, a native of Germany, had an intense education in automobile design at one of a handful of universities worldwide that have that specialty. Watching Star Wars Episode 1 opened Simon's eyes up to the possibility of designing fantasy vehicles. After seven years of drawing them for his book Cosmic Motors, he was picked by director Joe Kosinski to work on the vehicles in TRON: Legacy. That single job has evolved to a career designing vehicles for several Hollywood movies.

In this tutorial, Andrew Devis shows how easy it is to create, add materials to, animate and lip-sync a head in Autodesk 3ds max using the plug-ins from Di-O-Matic called 'Facial Studio' and 'Voice-O-Matic'. Andrew goes through the basics of this plug-in just to show how easy and quick it is to use and how powerful it can be - not to mention just how much time it can save you!

In the fourth and final part of his tutorial series on creating and controlling simple eyes in 3ds Max, Andrew Devis shows how to use manipulators to control the upper and lower eyelids of the eyes we have created. To do this, Andrew demonstrates how to use wire parameters to link specific manipulators to more than one object such that the eye lids of both eyes are controlled by one set of manipulators to ensure that they are synchronised. In addition, Andrew also shows how to lock transforms to limit possible mistakes while animating.

In the third part of his first 3ds Max tutorial series for Creative Cow, Andrew Devis continues with the project by showing how to control both eyes with one controller. He demonstrates two methods to do this including one method that uses a object created and repositioned in the scene using constraints and with added depth for better visual feedback and selection. Andrew also demonstrates how to reset the transforms of the repositioned item so that it can be moved.
