We are sorry to inform Creative Cow members that Bob Turner, longtime industry pundit, author and contributing editor to Video Systems magazine, died at his home last friday night, July 15, 2005. Bob had been fighting a prolonged battle with lung cancer and his wife, Peg, reported that Bob passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.

Before joining Video Systems, Bob was a contributing editor to Videography magazine. Bob's work extended beyond those who knew him through his articles in Video Systems and his own newsletter, The Cut, has been a popular vehicle for those wishing to know more about video post production and other related topics.

Our own recollection of Bob heralds back to 1994 when we began reading his articles in Videography magazine. Later, at the very beginning of our online community building, back in 1995 when we were building the Media 100 Worldwide Users Group website, Bob wrote us and commended us for what he thought was a useful site. We never forgot that kindness as he was a man whose notariety and respect in this industry was already then at near-legendary status.

Bob was an opinionated man whom some were quick to dismiss as being too avowedly Avid for their tastes. In his defense, we always felt that Bob held up Avid as the benchmark and standard against which everything else was to be judged. Owing to his longtime industry involvement, this was easy to understand as Bob himself was a longtime video and broadcast editor whose work heralded back to the very beginnings of the nonlinear editing marketplace. Like Avid itself, Bob was a pioneer and his voice has been an important one in this industry over the years. Bob's passion for this industry never waned and like Charles McConathy who passed away last year, Bob pushed innovation and his driving spirit helped define this industry.

The funeral for Bob will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2005.
