Article Focus:
In this tutorial, Creative Cow leader, Michael Park, demonstrates another, more advanced method for creating shimmering glitter particles using Trapcode's Particular. The main advancement is the implementation of 3d rotation of the glitter particles, as well as using expressions to convert the rotation of the particles in all 3 axis to drive a greyscale map, which in turn is used to color the particle using colorama and create the shimmer effect when the particles face the camera.

Thanks for the response Mike.
I am constantly finding new ways of using Particular, and I tell all Ae newbies the first plugin they HAVE to buy is this one. It's versatility and speed are brilliant.(I'm still gobsmacked at how you made a Christmas Tree!)
All the best,

| | | | Yes, I know the new capabilities of 2.0 make this tutorial a bit dated. However, I recorded this a year before 2.0 came out. Still I think it makes you think out of the box to create solutions when they are not readily apparent at first. Thanks for watching. You can check out newer videos on Particular 2.0 here at the Cow and on Red Giant TV. Also, if you are interested, I have a dvd here, Practical Particles, under the Master Series training section which addresses Particular 2.0 and the new features in 12 tutorials. Thanks again for your comments.

Great tutorial, and I've definately learnt something about Cosine functions!
Sadly, Particular 2.0 kind of defeats all your hard work, as it has directional shading from lights, and 3D auto-rotation of custom coloured particles.
Ho-hum, that's progress for you!

Sorry about the A/V sync problem. I noticed it when I was compressing for web and went into Premiere to try my best to fix it. I didn't have time to redo the entire tutorial. Hopefully, it is close enough to follow along. If I get some time, I will rerecord to eliminate the problem. | | | | |
