The short answer is look into Track Mattes or Mattes for short.

Mattes use one layer's transparency to cut out another layer.

I know I cover them in a few tutorials, including the original TV Look tutorial.

Thanks for the tutorial. My question is regarding the part where you say that fractal noise can be used as background within text. How do you go about doing this? In fact how do you add mask around text characters?

Also Aharon, to make any text have a shiny metal feel to it, what effect would be suitable.
