CreativeCOW presents 3D from 2D Image Using Displacement Maps -- Adobe After Effects Tutorial

Article Focus:
In this video tutorial Tudor "Ted" Jelescu shows how to create 3D / 2.5D movement from a 2D image using displacement maps in Adobe After Effects. He uses similar techniques as Mathew Fuller's "Advanced 2.5D Animation in AE" tutorial to pull depth from 2D images. Tudor uses FreeForm and displacement maps to be able to have a different camera move, one that rotates around the subject.

here is a quick test with freeform...

Ok here is a link without sound.

I'm not sure what technique you're referring to- it seems that you're showing a new plugin that does similar things with Free Form, FreeForm Pro or ShapeSifter AE.
Here's a couple of FreeForm Pro examples:

Maybe you can elaborate on the "unique" aspects.

Nope..Its definitely my technique, done in after effects completely from scratch, no plugin used, no depth map, no mesh warp...matter-of-fact my technique has some hi-tech implications outside After effects.My goal is to never make anything hard to do...so I study hard to perfect an idea that has Merritt..I am not a programmer...I am a designer that pushes the envelope to create fresh new ideas. and yes my thought process is "it has to be the best and leave no questions"...I am currently looking for help on creating a plug-in for FaceRipper...Let me just be honest...My technique behind what I am doing is worth billions..The plugin is only one aspect..yes,I would probably laugh, if someone had told me something is worth billions...the only thing i have to do is give it away and watch it developed by someone else. I just wanted to share what I am doing and maybe perhaps one day I could meet some honest team players that's willing to collaborate with me.

perhaps I have blown out my explanation of what my technique can do...I will explain my intention for such a plug-in. The thought of using depth-map/mesh deform is obviously nothing new,and to have a user paint a depth maps will usually result in inaccuracy. My approach is a new and accurate method at producing a 3D form from a single image.FaceRipper can produce a 360 degree form. The ability to add animated elements like smoke, fire, floral designs or have some volumetric smoke turn into a face..motion track a face or a 3D-like car into live footage... AE and FaceRipper can be used to create interactive flash base 3D movie posters.All the above can be achieve just using my technique in AE...FaceRipper can also be use in AE for several real world applications. I can guarantee you I don't waste time with recreating typical ideas...all I need now is some help.

same technique different name...

It looks interesting, no doubt about that, but I would like to see examples of how it works and how fast it is in order to be able to compare it with what is on the market now. I am a heavy duty user of 3d plugins in AE, so for me tests and benchmarks are relevant. If you do a a test - same face displacement using FreeForm Pro and your technique, comparing the time it took to achieve the final look and the rendering time - that would provide a tangible result to base your claims on. I recommend talking to Chris Bobotis - the developer of FreeForm Pro, mettle.com. He can give you some insight in the whole process of developing a plugin.

Ok I will give that a try...But a thought ran across my mind.Lets use A,B,C and D...in using my technique "A" would need the user input, "B" would be the automatic process and "C" is the end result of "A & B"... "D" would be a Depth-map created...I don't use Depth-maps, but I can create one. After taking a second look at "A,B&C",I realize I can skip "B" and "C" to Create "D" , a depth-map.. with just step "A" i can make a more accurate depth-Map...In my years of knowing about Depth-maps, I know their not easy to create from scratch for object modeling or even from real life...my previous research focus on how to create full models with limbs using depthmaps. I might be-able to use freeForm to accomplish that. but for now, been able to create accurate depthmaps from a single image is a great start. perhaps this might be a good marriage for My Technique and FreeForm. stay tuned

See that's the down side about having innovative ideas. To tell how something is done is to almost give it away...then if you don't tell, no one will know the great value...add some bad grammar or some unprofessionalism with that, then your sure enough done...but then there is still this wonderful idea that is waiting in the wind to be born...I often wonder did the world focus on who the greatest inventors was or did they focus on what they invented...what if they only focus on who they are..then they would have not make it in these modern times...big companies like Apple and Microsoft would love to get their hands on my idea...guarantee the best 3D or holographic communication or display system...it started with FaceRipper.

Here is a technique I came up with that is one of a kind.

Great effect though!

It's too easy for you and hard for others. And you must tell before you start, that you use 3-rd party plugins.
@Max Kukushkin
by Tudor "Ted" Jelescu
Sorry for any inconvenience- Free Form comes free with AE now and the basic technique is related to this plugin only- the rest is cosmetics that can be achieved with regular AE plugins as well, only in a different way.

Great tutorial! Can't get surfer displacement map quite as volumetric as your tutorial (even using burn tool), any tips?
@Jessica Dover
by Tudor "Ted" Jelescu
Start by cutting out the surfer in photoshop. Make a selection and fill that in with 50% gray. Use the burn tool to paint the edges- start by applying that at 10% and use long continuous strokes- best if you have a wacom tablet.
Make sure you get a nice gradient on the edges.
Hope that helps.

Hi, Tudor...

Very impressive... especially for your first tutorial.

I'm looking forward to your next one... and the one after that... and the one after that... etc.

Thanks very much for sharing.

by Juan Urquhart
I want to add that this is the best tutorial i've seen in a long time, pushes the limits of what can be done in after effects, one would expect this results from nuke ,fusion or even a 3d app, but not from the flat cards of AE...the displacement map done for the surfer in PS wit the burn tool is genius...

Please keep them coming!

It's encouraging to hear that you find it useful, especially since this is my first tutorial! I guess I'll make some more ;-)
