Here's a fun project just in time for the holidays. Rob Mize shows you how to use shapes and solids in After Effects to create your own custom snow globe that you customize with your own media. Use particles and fonts to create organic or ornamental snowflakes, all without the use of 3rd party plug-ins.

Thanks for the tutorial. I had problems finding the Monotype Sorts Font, you cannot get that for free (anymore?)and you need the snowflake thing. I googled for that font and found an example. Download image, crop, invert black to white in Photoshop en replace it on the timeline on the right place. That worked for me.

Hi, Chad...
Sorry you're running into a problem... a couple of things come to mind. I take it even when you advance down the timeline, you don't see particles? In Particle World, make sure the Grid is not set to Producer Grid Only or Floor Grid Only... I would set this to Off. Make sure your Texture Layer, i.e. the Snowflake Precomp, extends to the end of the timeline. I'll continue to ponder this and will pass on any more ideas I may have. Please let me know if you find your solution.
Regards.... Rob

Hi and thanks for the tutorial. Besides needing some better JPGs, I have been following along and doing well, creating all my elements. However, I seem to have come to a stumbling block; creating the snow. When I apply the "CC Particle World," I get the grid for the floor, but I don't see any particles of any type. Therefore, when I continue changing paramaters, nothing visibly changes. Any suggestions? Did I miss a step? Thanks.

mocha Tracks The Wolf of Wall Street

mocha Tracks The Wolf of Wall Street

With multiple VFX Oscars (Hugo and Titanic, plus a nomination for Apollo 13) plus a couple of Emmys (Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) under his belt, the most remarkable thing about Rob Legato's latest VFX extravaganza is that it doesn't appear to have any VFX at all! Martin Scorsese's The Wolf of Wall Street is a masterpiece of what has become known as invisible effects, and this article from our friends at Imagineer, highlighting Rob's work with mocha, is a real eye-opener.
