I keep getting an error when it comes to applying the expression? What am I doing wrong? using AE, CS5 10.0.

There are several free texture images available on the internet if you do a google search. Stock Exchange (http://www.sxc.hu) also has many available for free (there are terms, though).

Another option would be to skip them altogether and just create the hole right in the solid layer. The Roughen Edges effect can add interest to the hole's edges. You could also apply a Fractal Noise effect to the layer and play with the settings to make the layer more interesting.
