It is easy to do some motion tracking and attach a basic stock footage element of fire onto your hands, but there is a little bit of work involved if you actually want to make it look good. In this intermediate tutorial by After Effects expert Tobias, you'll see how to use a fire stock footage element to set your thumb on fire! There are lots of useful tricks for null objects, expressions, and more in this tutorial that will help you create all sorts of other cool visual effects -- or set even more things on fire!

It is easy to do some basic motion tracking and attach a basic stock footage element of fire onto your hands, but there is a little bit of work involved if you actually want to make it look good.

After tracking my thumb, we will use a looping fire stock footage element and set my thumb on fire! With the help of a delta null object and some clever expressions we will have the fire bend organically as I move my hand around. Finally we will add some advanced lighting to the scene using the Difference Matte effect to avoid spending hours rotoscoping.

There are lots of little useful tricks in this tutorial that will help you create all sorts of other cool visual effects - or set even more things on fire!

Note that this is an Intermediate Tutorial, so we assume you know a little about motion tracking, masking, and some basics of Expressions, but you'll naturally be picking up a lot of this as you work through the tutorial.

For the fire element I am using Action Essentials 2 by Video Copilot, but you can also find some free fire elements here: http://footagecrate.com/fire.html.

Now, on to the tutorial!

Tobias Gleissenberger from Melbourne, Australia got hooked onto film making and visual effects with the rise of YouTube. After watching way too many videos from Freddie Wong, Final Cut King and Video Copilot, he realised that creating impressive VFX was now well within the reach of the indie filmmaker.

Unable to find videos that were both educational AND entertaining, he started to create his own style of 'edutainment' tutorials online. He enjoys sharing his enthusiasm and passion for filmmaking and visual effects with anyone who is willing to put up with his 'special' type of humour.

Thank you so much Ronald!

It's an absolute pleasure to be on Creative COW in a more 'official' capacity. I'm always happily surprised to see that other people seem to enjoy my silly little tutorials. I love what I do and it's a great experience to share what (little) I know and learn about vfx and film making with the world.

Kind regards,

What Are Adobe Motion Graphics Templates?

A Motion Graphics Template, referred to as a MOGRT, is an animated sequence that is self-contained and can be used in Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Premiere Rush and Adobe After Effects, combining graphics, text, audio and video files, as well as vector or still images (including logos), to create a still or animation that can then be customized by the MOGRT user. The result is a dynamic creative tool that provides design freedom and is consistent to its users across apps and devices. Reuse, share, and even sell them!
