I was needing a feather on an animated garbage matte and this got me going in the right direction. Here's a slight modification that might make keyframmed garbage mattes easier.

  • Instead of using the titler, just add a black video or color matte clip in place of the title for your matte track. The actual color doesn't matter.

  • Next add your garbage matte to the matte track instead of your video clip. Keyframe as needed now or after matte keying.

  • Follow Jon's other steps to add the Drop Shadow to the matte track and apply Track Matte Key to the video track below and you're good to go.

Thanks for the great tip Jon!

Great tut Jon.

I especially like you showing how useful the titler can be. I had seen some vids on youtube on using the titler as a quick animation tool in Premiere, but I like how you show how it can be used to embed graphics, even put something on a say a monitor without having to do corner pins or anything else more complex!

Brilliant! Thank you for the tips. I used a title oval to mask a PIP on a cycling video so it made the rear camera look like a cyclist mirror. Took 10 minutes to complete and has a dramatic effect in my videos. Cheers.

John, good tip. I usually have to go to After Effects to achieve a mask feather.
Thanks

No worries. :)

Seems to be a topic that keeps popping up and a request to add feathering to masks inside the NLE. Thought I'd share my workflow - glad its hitting the spot for someone.

Cheers JB
