NAB 2013: Anton/Bauer
At NAB 2013, Anton/Bauer celebrated its Scientific and Engineering Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the conception and design of the CINE VCLX Portable Power System with a walk down the red carpet and champagne for booth visitors. Anton/Bauer, part of Vitec Videocom, a Vitec Group company, designed the CINE VCLX series to power cameras as well as the supplementary equipment (such as lighting) required. The series handles the specific needs of 24V film, 14V video and 28V digital cinema equipment and their associated accessories.

The company also showcased its new Anton/Bauer Gold Spectrum Wireless Series, the result of a collaboration between Anton/Bauer and Vitec Group sister company Integrated Microwave Technologies (IMT). The Gold Spectrum Wireless Series is comprised of the AB-HDRF Kit, AB-HDTX transmitter, AB-HDRX dual diversity COFDM receiver and/or AB Direct VU handheld receiver/monitor. The components' sizes are ideal for reality TV, ENG/EFP, OB and live event coverage.

The AB-HDTX transmitter is camera mountable and features SD/HD encoding in a miniature transmit solution package. Designed for a new generation of HD-SDI capable compact cameras, it delivers an RF output of 100 mW from a package that is placed between the Gold Mount, camera and Anton/Bauer Logic Series battery. The AB-HDRX COFDM receiver uses maximal ratio combing to support MPEG-4 video and embedded audio decoding, and also supports video and embedded audio transmission with selectable bandwidths of 6, 7 and 8 MHz.
Jon Richards, director of The Incredible Mr. Goodwin, a new U.K. television program chronicling the feats of the well-known daredevil and escape artist Jonathan Goodman, was tasked with capturing Goodwin's escape from the EDF Energy London Eye ferris wheel for the show's season finale, he utilized the new Gold SpectrumTM Wireless Kit and AB Direct VU handheld confidence monitor/COFDM diversity receiver from Anton/Bauer®
Richards and his production team utilized multiple cameras to help capture the daredevil's attempt, including three Sony F3 cameras equipped with Sound Devices PIX 240s to maximize the resolution bit rate, Canon 5D Mark IIIs, GoPros and a HELI-cam with a Canon 5D.
The AB Direct VU features a handheld monitor with built-in receiver, also powered via Anton/Bauer Gold Mounts and batteries. It displays COFDM video transmissions with a built-in 9" 16:9 format 1080i HD LCD screen, making it useful for ENG/EFP, OB, cine and film production and sporting events. The LCD screen is easy to read in daylight, offers a simple menu-driven interface, and can receive up to 12 camera positions. It can send video over Ethernet to remote software or hardware decoders as well as stream shots live over the Internet via IP. When used together, the components only draw about 15 watts of power.
Anton/Bauer also unveiled its newest lithium-ion (Li-Ion) battery, the DIONIC HD, which is intended to power digital cinema cameras such as the Sony F65, RED cameras, ARRI Alexa, the Vision Research Phantom series and more. Delivering up to 10 amps of power, the DIONIC HD is a 183Wh battery featuring special-application Li-Ion cell technology that relies on sixth-generation cell technology and integrates the company's latest software architecture and an improved LCD for use in extreme environmental conditions. Compared to a NiCad or NiMH battery, the DICON HD weighs 40 percent less, has 25 percent more capacity and will run a 30-watt camera, monitors and multiple accessories for more than six hours.

The new Li-Ion battery also features Anton/Bauer's newly enhanced RealTime display, which indicates fuel gauge and remaining run-time data simultaneously and without requiring any setup. The DICON HD's motion-detection feature also offers a sleep-mode setting that reduces battery self-discharge; the motion sensor can also "wake up" the battery.
Anton/Bauer also unveiled its new charging system, the PowerCharger 3000 series, which includes three chargers: FastCharge QUAD with WiFi, FastCharger QUAD and FastCharger DUAL with WiFi. All of the PowerChargers offer a 300-watt (QUAD) or 150-watt (DUAL) power supply to charge Logic Series batteries in the shortest time possible.Anton/Bauer Vice President of Product Management and Marketing Chris O'Neill reported that these "next-generation simultaneous fast chargers" were built in response to customer requests and offer "unprecedented WiFi capability."
Anton/Bauer Power Charger InterActive® Series
The FastCharger QUAD with WiFi enables the user to receive diagnostic information. With four-position simultaneous charging, with 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz wide-range input, the FastCharger QUAD includes field-upgradable software via USB or WiFi. Its sister product, the more economical FastCharger QUAD, offers the same performance, but without the LCD and WiFi. The FastCharger DUAL with WiFi is a two-position charger perfect, which makes it suitable for any user with a lower quantity of batteries to manage. A compact size, the FastCharger DUAL with WiFi offers 100-240VAC, 50/60Hz wide range input and field upgradable software via USB.
All PowerCharger 3000 series chargers come with the MAXX II Warranty; users can secure an additional one-year warranty when a charger is registered online. The WiFi-enabled chargers come with Anton/Bauer's latest AB-BMS software, which makes the process of managing inventory simpler for the end user. To update software on the PowerCharger 3000 series, the user connects the charger via USB or WiFi to download the latest version. The FastCharger QUAD and DUAL WiFi models also offer the option to add the External Diagnostic Discharge Module (EDM), a 4-amp sequential discharge module to field test batteries.
A belated congratulations to Anton/Bauer for its much-deserved Scientific & Technical Award win! With the introduction of so many new products - the Gold Spectrum Wireless Series, the DICON HD battery and the PowerCharger 3000 series - it's clear that Anton/Bauer is not resting on its laurels...not that we ever suspected they would.
