Shooters will get more versatile lenses, cameras, and workflows this year as Canon updates its line of professional camcorders, introduces a new lens, and refreshes the C500's firmware for 4K.

A step above Canon's XF105 and XF100 professional camcorders, the new XF205 and XF200 models come with an upgraded wide-angle 26.8mm optical zoom lens and CMOS sensor, along with a lightweight and compact body design, significantly lighter than the XF305/300 models. The XF205 adds 3G-SDI and HD-SDI as well as genlock. Both models support recording in MXF or MP4 for broad use in viewing and delivery. These smaller cameras are a response to shooters' need for quality images with a smaller footprint in the field, ideal for everything from news gathering to documentaries.

Canon's new CINE-SERVO 17-200mm T2.95 zoom lens was introduced to bring many of the capabilities of cinema lenses to a wider range of video capture. The new lens has an ENG-style Digital Drive hand rip with zoom rocker switch which can be detached to allow manual cinema operation. Many single-sensor digital cameras are being adopted in news gathering and event coverage situations, so the new 17-200mm was created to be similarly versatile in the field.

Canon's new Cine-Servo CN7x17KAS S/P1 T2.95 zoom lens is available in PL and EF mount options - interchangeable, but must be done in a Canon service center.


And a free firmware upgrade is coming to the C500 this fall. The firmware will allow on-set playback and confirmation of 4K RAW video up to 24fps. Previously, 4K RAW playback on a laptop and other compact devices used in the field has been difficult because of processing power.

While Canon continues to respond to pleas from the production world for more immediate workflows, it also sees a more crowded future for as companies who weren't traditionally known for cameras introduce their own. "It's technical anarchy," said Canon Senior Fellow Larry Thorpe, who also noted that it's a great sign that the industry is "healthy and buzzing."

Canon highlighted an end-to-end 4K workflow at NAB 2013, showing a digital intermediate suite and a live 4K broadcast with "Ultra-Zoom" applications. The company also debuted two new, entry-level professionals video cameras, the XA25 and XA20. The cameras feature Canon's first-ever Organic LED (OLED) touch panels, weigh 2.6 pounds and are priced at under $3,000.
