Storage and data management company NetApp has announced a new set of tools and software to enhance hybrid cloud services, allowing customers to scale cloud storage as needed, use a blend of private and public clouds, and maintain control of their data with simple management tools.
Hybrid cloud services are a bridge between on-premise storage infrastructure and the cloud of choice, which allows for certainty in control while taking advantage of cloud services. George Kurian, executive vice president of Product Operations at NetApp, said, "Our software improves the economics, flexibility, and business impact of a customer's existing infrastructure, while our cloud technology solutions give customers the needed confidence in our ability to help them navigate the future."
NetApp's new Cloud ONTAP service adds their branded storage operating system, Data ONTAP, to Amazon S3 or EVS storage. This means that customers can access Amazon's cloud services with NetApp's easy to use software, which operates under standard protocols and makes it easy to access and manage your storage while Amazon continues to manage the disks.
Of particular interest to media companies is the ability to quickly dial up or dial down the amount of cloud storage currently in use. For example, a film production working in multiple cities or continents might need to push a lot of data at different points in the process. When the film is wrapped, the need goes away. With the Cloud ONTAP service, this is easily managed with a data mobility tool and accessed in a file based format, because data can be scaled up or down rapidly, in a pay as you go model. Jason Danielson, Media & Entertainment Solutions, NetApp, added, "This is a critical update because it allows customers to interact with the cloud in a way they never thought they could."
NetApp also introduced NetApp Private Storage which allows customers to use multiple clouds and maintain control of data on a single data storage device placed in a colocation facility. This is useful for broadcasters who are sensitive to their content being shared in the cloud but still want to use it for computing tasks. Danielsen added, "You get to hold onto your content in storage you manage yourself, and you can turn on the cloud for computing at a moment's notice for rendering and transcoding."
Enhancements were also made to NetApp's storage operating system itself, called Clustered Data ONTAP 8.3, helping organizations of all sizes to improve their levels of availability, performance and efficiency. This includes an improvement in dollars per gigabyte for lower cost -- spinning disks for entry level systems improving by 30% and all flash systems improving by 17%. Running on the latest storage systems it can scale up to one hundred petabytes of storage, which is far more than most people need but important for the lifetime of the product.
With the hybrid cloud gaining traction in IT and media infrastructures in companies of all sizes, Net App believes that all parts of the cloud must be connected and work seamlessly together to form an integrated system, regardless of the cloud service provider. "Our rich set of data management capabilities that we've built up for a number of years that no one else really has on top of the cloud today is what sets us apart," added John Frederiksen, Vice President of Production Management, ONTAP Products.
