The "Scribble" and the "Stroke" effects are often overlooked due to the fact that it isn't immediately obvious how they work as they won't work unless applied in a very particular way. In this in-depth tutorial, Andrew Devis explains how to apply these effects and then goes through the many options in each effect which can make them very powerful and able to produce a surprisingly large variety of results.

Thank You Andrew! Nicely done. I do wish you would do more no matter how complicated.

Hi Camille

I didn't actually do a follow up to this tutorial in the end, I started but it just got so complex and didn't really work very well so I've left it ... sorry ....

the tutorial was very good!!
But then i want to know whether i can use a video footage instead of a .jpg file to create a scribble ?

Hi Himanta

The answer isn't quite as straight forward as I would like. The answer technically is yes, but in reality it is quite hard to achive and often needs some setting up to get best results.

There is a tool in AE under the layers menu called auto trace. This function takes a bit of understanding (I will get round to a tut at some point but probably not for a while) but it will give you masks that can be used for all kinds of different purposes.

However, that said, I still find it hard to control and it doesn't always give me the results I want.

Sorry not to be more helpful.

Hi John

Sorry there isn't a link yet as I haven't done it. Actually as you noticed it is quite hard to do and if I get round to it I will be using the 'auto-track' function to create the masks to then add the stroke to. I did have a play and it is fine with simple shapes, but when you get into more complex shapes it can become a bit of a pain!.

hope this helps

Hi, Andrew

Great easy to follow tutorial, thanks. At the end you mention covering how to apply stroke to a shape layer in a future tutorial. That's what I'm looking to figure out but I'm having trouble finding that video. Any chance you can share a link?

Thanks
