In this first tutorial in a set of 4 on working in 3D space in After Effects, Andrew Devis shows how to set up your layers in 3D space and how to view all the layers without ruining your camera view. Andrew sets up 4 layers in 3D space, moving both their positions and rotations. In the next tutorial, Andrew will show how to set up a static 3D particle system which will enhance the 3D effect as the camera eventually animates through 3D space. In the last 2 tutorials, Andrew will show how to use a very quick and simple technique to animate the camera and then how to finesse the animation of that camera for excellent results.

Hello,
I think the video might be down. I've tried to load it a few times and it doesn't seem to be working.

Happy New Year Master Yoda!!!!!!!!!! How are ya doing? I have a question for you. Would you recommend buying TWIXTOR or is time warp sufficient enough for this young jedi wanna-bee? Thank you and yes, the force is strong with you!
@Ian Hagerty
by Andrew Devis
Good day :o) What an interesting question!

The answer with all plug-ins is 'will I use it and will it pay for itself'? Unless of course you get it to train or teach others.

Twixtor is amazing and certainly going to give you options you won't have with time warp ... so if you have a project that will benefit from Twixtor and all it gives and you feel it is worth the not inconsiderable cost, then go for it ... I am still longing for RE:Flex but can't justify at the moment ;o)

Let me know how you get on

Thanks Master Yoda! I do get an academic discount, but at 20% only (better than nothing). After effects is such an amazing beast! It is quite easy to get overwhelmed and want to be a master jedi right away... baby steps! Have a good SundAY!

Hi Teresa

I'm pleased you've found this helpful as well, I only wish someone had told me how to do this when I started! Still, with this information you can be up and running in 3D (or as it is called in AE 2.5D because each layer has no depth) very soon.

Thanks again

Excellent series of tutorials, Andrew. Some great tips. Just started doing more complex 3D animations, and was struggling with proper camera movements. Thanks for the pointers!

Hi Eric

Yes, this is a brand new tutorial which has just gone up today and I believer that the next 3 will go up over the next 3 days.

I can't answer for creative cow about dates though, you will need to take that up directly with them.

I hope you find the series helpful, it may seem simple stuff but I hope it will also prove to be useful all the same.

Thanks for getting in touch

Andrew,

Thanks for the tips in this tutorial. I was looking for the next tutorials but do not see them.

Just a general note to the COW, is there any reason why tutorials don't have dates? It would be helpful to know when they are made.

This one might be brand new. :)

Great work.

Thanks,
Eric

In this second tutorial in a set of 4 on working in 3D space in After Effects, Andrew Devis shows how to set up a 3D particle system so that all the particles are static for the whole of the composition. The reason why this is done is that as the camera passes the static particles, it helps to enhance or volumize the 3D space adding both interest and parallax into your scene. In the last 2 tutorials, Andrew will show how to set up a very quick and simple camera animation technique and then show how to finesse the animation of that camera for excellent results.

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

Want to learn how to create advanced visual effects? Learn how to use mocha AE to track your shot and add advanced visual effects to live action footage inside Adobe After Effects. mocha can help you track shots that would be hard to track using traditional 2D point or feature trackers because it is a PLANAR TRACKER. A planar tracker uses planes and textures to track as opposed to points or groups of pixels. This allows the tracker to stay on track even if your shot contains motion blur or a very shallow depth of field. mocha AE comes included with Adobe After Effects and is available since CS3 and there is no reason for you not to use this awesome tool to make it easier for you to track your shot, replace screens or rotoscope!
