Cameras are notoriously difficult to get to grips with in After Effects. In this tutorial, Andrew Devis explains some of the behaviors and problems that are common to camera animation and then shows how to do a simple one dimensional animation, while pointing out why that solution cannot be used for more than one dimension (x,y or z rotation).

Great tutorial, Andrew. I'm going on to Part 2!

Thanks Kenny, good to hear from you :o)

There will actually be a part 2 and a part 3! Part 2 is how to build a simple rig and how important layer order is (and why) and part 3 is about linking up the rig to a controller layer and then how to use the controller layer as a way of moving the point of view of the whole rig.

I am sure that there are still lots of issues with cameras that I can still address but at least this is a start.

All the best
Andrew

... because it's all about stories ...

Great tut, Andrew! I've been in a constant wrestling match with AE's camera for years now :) This was very helpful. Look forward to #2.

Peace,

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

Want to learn how to create advanced visual effects? Learn how to use mocha AE to track your shot and add advanced visual effects to live action footage inside Adobe After Effects. mocha can help you track shots that would be hard to track using traditional 2D point or feature trackers because it is a PLANAR TRACKER. A planar tracker uses planes and textures to track as opposed to points or groups of pixels. This allows the tracker to stay on track even if your shot contains motion blur or a very shallow depth of field. mocha AE comes included with Adobe After Effects and is available since CS3 and there is no reason for you not to use this awesome tool to make it easier for you to track your shot, replace screens or rotoscope!
