Some exciting news has been announced by FXHome.com, the makers of a powerful and feature-rich Compositing, VFX, Motion Graphics application called HitFilm. And the news is this - they have launched a KickStarter to fund the porting of HitFilm from PC only to also be on Mac.

Now, as far as I can see and even though I'm a PC user, this is great news for the VFX industry simply because it brings in the best thing that Adobe After Effects could ever want - strong competition - which will eventually translate into an even better tool-set and work-flow for us - the end users. To miss-quote a proverb - 'As iron sharpens iron, so one competitor sharpens another', and the best thing we can give both After Effects and HitFilm is to have them competing on as level a playing field as we can realistically get because as HitFilm grows in maturity and is picked up by people at all levels in the industry Adobe will be 'kept on their toes' which is good news again for us. I'm not suggesting that Adobe are in any way laid back about After Effects - in fact, my experience is that they are very responsive - I just want them to have a really good reason to stay like that. So that means we need a strong competitor like HitFilm on PC AND Mac and that's something we can help with through supporting their KickStarter initiative.

INCENTIVES

If you visit their page on KickStarter http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/fxhome/hitfilm-for-mac you will see that some of the funding options will give you access to the Mac edition as soon as it's released (planned for around November this year 2013) at a significantly reduced price. And you have to admit it, there is a good chance that if you're on a Mac you're going to want to get your hands on this powerful low cost compositor sooner rather than later - so maybe this is a way to show support and ensure you get your copy as soon as it's ready.

Although HitFilm does offer a basic NLE function, its strengths are in the compositing, motion graphic and VFX tools it offers for a very low price (around $399 for the Ultimate version). These tools do a lot of what can be done in After Effects without the use of additional costly plug-ins! For example, also included is a HitFilm version of the award winning Mocha planar tracking software as well as powerful particle system tools and green-screen tools that are right up there - not to mention its support for 3D objects created in other 3D programs!

While the HitFilm interface is still a little clunky and the NLE functions very limited and at the price point it clearly isn't After Effects - the product is powerful, capable and developing rapidly and being picked up by independent film makers as a low cost way to get great VFX. And, it's not just indies as there seems to be a growing number of 'pros' who are beginning to take HitFilm a lot more seriously and many of those are relishing the idea of having it available cross platform.

To reach its full potential HitFilm is also deepening its integration with NLEs. Presently, HitFilm has extremely good integration with Sony Vegas Pro 12 in a similar way to the integration of After Effects with Premiere Pro giving real power to those who don't use the Adobe suite. It is even possible to buy a version of Sony Vegas Pro 12 that already comes bundled with HitFilm Ultimate 2.

So, even though I am on a PC, love using Adobe After Effects and already have access to this frankly impressive product - I still want to get behind this KickStarter initiative to port HitFilm to Mac as I believe it will be great for not just for HitFilm and After Effects - but more importantly for us - the people who end up using these incredible tools day in and day out.

If you want to find out more about HitFilm visit their webpage here http://hitfilm.com/ultimate. The KickStarter project aims to raise #25 000 (note that this is #UK and equates roughly to $38 750 US) and finishes on Jun 7th 2013.

Don't bother with the Mac version -- clean up the Windows version, and take advantage of the added power of GPUs, capability to output 12-bit color (soon, monitors that can handle 14-bit color over display port will be available) at 4K resolution, that you can do on Windows platforms. THAT will differentiate this product from the rest, not just another mac version.

Track Motion has nothing to do with tracking motion but is the ability to animate a whole track which includes all the events/clips on that track. Additionally, you can animate a track in 2D & 3D giving some really cool options inside Sony Vegas Pro. However, if you also want to use Layer Dimensionality with 3D Track Motion you need to know how as there are a few extra steps. In this tutorial, Andrew Devis explains what Track Motion is, how to set it up and goes through some of the issues involved if you want to use it in conjunction with Layer Dimensionality for cool results.

NAB 2012: Sony Creative Software

Sony Creative Software had a fruitful NAB 2012, introducing two particularly interesting audio and video editing tools: Spectral Layers, which lets audio professionals precisely de-construct and change an audio mix, and TemplateBuilder, which maximizes creative time spent on motion graphics. Vegas Pro 11 was also highlighted and Sony also soft-launched DO Studio, the Blu-ray authoring tool acquired earlier from Netblender.
