The Workmanlike Approach - This is the first of 2 After Effects tutorials which do the same thing but with slightly different methods. This version is the both slightly simpler and quicker method, and is ideal if you are only controlling a couple of items with your audio. Version 2 shows how to keep all the controllers on a single layer and is better suited for more complex projects with many layers, which need good organisation. You will probably find it useful to watch this tutorial first if you are not experienced in using audio and expressions.

Hi Andrew
Thanks for the great tutorial.
I have a question, if you will. How could I control color using audio in a similar way. I'm quite new to scripts. I tried linking the color in the way you showed for the glow attributes, but it didn't work how I'd like. I'm looking to have the color go through some kind of spectrum, like it's red when the sound is loud, blue when it's low and purple in between, something like that. Could you help out?
Thanks a lot :)

Hi Andrew,

This is soooo cool! Just what i need for my music vids!
Thank you!!!

Only one problem. I followed all your instructions yet somehow the naughty program doesn't want to do as it's supposed to! (mom suggested smacking its bottom but i don't think that would help lol)
it worked with the glow but not with the stroke or fill of my star. i did it all right (i think) with the expression code and the pikwiks. when i say linear(value,15,20,0,4) for the stroke for instance it just disappears completely!
Same with the fill.
Then when i say (value, 15,20,1,4) then it just shows the stroke of 1px. although my music does go up sometimes to even over level 30.
Do you have any suggestions why this happens?

Thanks a lot,
Camille

Not sure because I don't know your music, but try reducing the first 15 to a lower figure? What you are saying is when the first figure is hit then the stroke must be 0, so if you lower that figure then 0 will happen less if your music is mainly over the lower figure ...

Hope that helps
Andrew

... because it's all about stories ...
+1

The More Elegant Approach - This follow-on AE tutorial to the previous one, which gave a more 'workmanlike' approach to controlling effects and parameters with audio, shows how to keep things well organised, with all your controllers on a single layer so they are easier to find in your project. The same effects are achieved but this approach is slightly more complex with the aim of keeping your project better organised.

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

Want to learn how to create advanced visual effects? Learn how to use mocha AE to track your shot and add advanced visual effects to live action footage inside Adobe After Effects. mocha can help you track shots that would be hard to track using traditional 2D point or feature trackers because it is a PLANAR TRACKER. A planar tracker uses planes and textures to track as opposed to points or groups of pixels. This allows the tracker to stay on track even if your shot contains motion blur or a very shallow depth of field. mocha AE comes included with Adobe After Effects and is available since CS3 and there is no reason for you not to use this awesome tool to make it easier for you to track your shot, replace screens or rotoscope!
