A successful stock video sales business, even if only part-time, relies heavily on the old adage, “practice makes perfect”. It’s a continual process of improving what you capture, how you capture it, and then how you market your stock video sales. Here are four strategies you can use to increase your sales.


Create a Stock Library
The more inventory you have, the more chances you have for a sale. While it only takes one really good video clip to make multiple sales, you should consider submitting as many clips as possible in order to get your footage noticed. Be aggressive when submitting your videos to stock marketplaces like Adobe Stock. Familiarize yourself with their rules regarding stock video submissions in order to avoid having your clips rejected.

All stock video sites have standards so get to know them to avoid potential problems before you start shooting video. For example, if you want to sell your videos on Adobe Stock, keep your maximum duration to 60 seconds and a maximum file size of 3900 MB (3.9 GB). Other sites have varying minimum and maximum requirements.

So, as stated before, do your research to avoid rejections.


Specialize! Find your niche.
Consider narrowing down your free time shooting to a specific genre and then work on perfecting those shots. The more specialized you are at shooting a specific genre, the more skilled you’ll become and that can translate into dollar signs.

Find a niche that fits within your current lifestyle. If you’re an adrenaline junkie, consider shooting some of your outrageous adventures. If you live in or near a big city, think about shooting city skylines or the hustle and bustle of downtown. If you live out in the country or near sweeping landmasses, consider aerial footage. Whatever fits best into your specific lifestyle, focus on it and perfect it and you just might earn a little extra cash for your efforts!

Drone footage is also popular and the marketplace has become saturated with content in recent years. However with certain legalities still being worked out, many clips may get delisted over time, so it is best if you have your commercial license before you upload any drone footage.

So while you may be a jack of all trades when it comes to shooting video, try to focus on one or two types of video footage you really enjoy shooting and make it your niche. Become an expert in this market segment and it can really put your work at the forefront of stock video sales. The more specialized you can be, the more potential you have to make money.


Hire Actors/Models

When using actors in your footage, make sure you get a variety of shots with different angles and silhouettes. Maximize your time by creating multiple shot options for sale as different clips. Be sure to be inclusive when hiring your actors. You’ll reach more potential clients if you include individuals from various cultures and ethnicities.

For example, consider a shoot in an office setting that consists of various men and women around a meeting table. Using that same setting, mix up the actors to have the shot be all women or maybe a group with culturally diverse individuals. In other words, maximize your shoot time by creating multiple options for uploading to stock marketplaces.

Be sure to get your models to sign releases! Even if your models faces are partially obscured, it is still important to get a signed release. Many marketplaces, including Adobe Stock, make it easy to upload your releases when submitting your video footage.


Remove Branding/Logos
Make every effort to remove all branding from any footage you might shoot. This tends to be more of an issue when shooting around town or in busy urban areas, but brand logos can easily show up off the beaten path as well.

Keeping your footage “branding free” can be challenging at times but buyers of stock footage don’t want to inadvertently advertise for other companies and all stock marketplaces ban footage with discernible logos or branding. So keeping your footage brand free is a must.

Vacations are a mixed bag depending on your destination. Shooting footage on your nature-based vacation won’t give you many branded elements that you have to worry about. You’ll rarely see a branded advertisement in the middle of the Grand Canyon or Yosemite National Park. But if your vacation takes you to popular tourist destinations, watch out! Billboards, store signage, branded merchandise and logo apparel are everywhere. However, sometimes it is unavoidable.

In these cases, knowing some basic editing tools can help you rid your footage of brands. Adobe After Effects has the Clone Stamp tool, Content Aware Fill, and some masking and tracking tools that make it possible to remove logos.
