CreativeCOW presents NAB 2012: Cache-A -- Archiving and Back-Up Feature

Cache-A Corporation brought the latest version of its Power-Cache Archive Server, which Creative COW honored at last year's NAB with a Blue Ribbon win for "Best Archiving Solution." This year, the new high-performance Power-Cache Archive Server includes the latest version 2.1 software release, which contains a host of powerful features for all the models.

Vice President of Sales & Marketing Mark Ostlund

The predominate reason that users gravitate to the Power-Cache Archive Server? "Throughput," said Vice President of Sales & Marketing Mark Ostlund. "People who need the throughput really need it, and that's what we provide, with our noted appliance functionality combined with a blindingly fast disk array and ultra-fast networking." Power-Cache also features a separate SSD drive for its operating system to ensure peak archiving and restore performance and reliability at all times.

New features include what Ostlund said was the one most requested by users: the ability to queue jobs from multiple users or events, enabling any Cache-A device to be more responsive in demanding user environments. Also new is the ability to directly mount Apple file shares thus improving performance and convenience in Mac environments, new status reporting for more information on the file transfer progress and new network configuration controls to give users the ability to set up and view the status of each Ethernet port. A new RAID manager, SSD OS capabilities, multiple tape drive support and reporting functionality round out the new features.

The one rack-unit Power-Cache Archive Server can control up to four LTO-5 drives with up to two concurrently at full speed. Library24 or Library48 options and a one rack-unit expansion chassis that can hold one or two LTO-5 tape drives can be connected in any combination of up to four tape drives. For archiving of large projects, Power-Cache (and Pro-Cache) work with the Cache-A Library24 and Library 48 to automate archival workflows. Cache-A's Library24 option can accommodate up to two internal drives and Library48 can accommodate up to four tape drives when driven from the new Power-Cache model.

Power-Cache -- and the company's Pro-Cache5 and Prime-Cach5 -- also includes LTFS capability. Available as a simple, free software upgrade from Cache-A, this format enables users to interchange content across different operating systems, software applications and physical locations, ensuring application independence, transportability and protection from obsolescence.

"We are one of the early adopters of LTFS," reported Ostlund. "We're seeing heightened interest in LTFS and a call for interoperability."

Ostlund noted that Cache-A's LTO-5 based products with LTFS make "an ideal archiving and interchange solution" for production and post production workflows as well as improving asset management and interchange. "Because LTFS makes the contents of the tape compatible and accessible to any facility with an LTO-5 tape drive, it provides a self-contained content delivery system as well as a highly reliable archive format," he added. Ostlund reports that HBO, Safeway and Offhollywood are among the first companies to deploy Cache-A's LTFS technology with their archive appliances.

To read more about Cache-A's unique implementation of LTFS, the company has made a white paper available.

Cache-A continues to make good on the excellence in archiving that won it last year's Blue Ribbon award. The company continues to implement LTFS in particularly usable and efficient ways that make it even more relevant for media and entertainment companies that are so intent on safeguarding their audio-visual assets. Archiving is an Achilles heel in today's digital workflow. Knowing that Cache-A is keeping its eye on this crucial need is good news for anyone who values efficiency in production and post as well as the safety of the end result.
