At NAB 2013, Sony Creative Software showcased its entire line of products including Vegas Pro 12, SpectraLayers Pro, Sound Forge Pro Mac, Sound Forge Pro 10 and DoStudio. In addition, said Sony Creative Software Vice President of Marketing Dave Chaimson, the company offered hands-on tutorials, daily stage presentations, and demonstrations by professionals in TV production and sound design.

Vegas Pro 12 software already offers an Integrated Device Explorer, which works with a wide range of file-based acquisition formats from Sony and other manufacturers, enabling users to browse the files on the camcorder and transfer only those needed. Introduced at NAB 2013 is support for Panasonic P2. Vegas Pro 12 can now ingest P2 media using Vegas Pro's Device Explorer, and edit the DVCPRO 25/50/100 and AVC-Intra 50/100 MXF files natively. Users can also round-trip material from the P2 camera.

Also debuted at NAB 2013 is built-in support for 4K XAVC files, with Vegas Pro's signature drag-and-drop, no-transcode-required functionality. Users creating 2K and 4K workflows who thus need the best performance for 2K and 4K XAVC content, can use a new proxy HD workflow for full frame rate playback on a wide variety of hardware configurations, from compact laptops to advanced multi core workstations.

Spectators at NAB enjoy a taste of Vegas.

The Sony AVC encoder and customize dialog were updated to allow users to create AVCHD 2.0 templates/streams. Vegas Pro 12 now also supports the metadata attached to modern cameras and cell phones, meaning that files are automatically opened with the proper orientation.

An enhanced Vegas Pro Explorer now features a Thumbnail View.

Vegas Pro 12 also supports legacy tape-based formats, with full "print to tape" functionality. New at NAB 2013 was HDCAM SR encoding. Users can now encode to all flavors of the HDCAM SR mastering format, including 220 Mb/s SR Lite and 880 Mb/s SR 444. A full range of format templates are included, and the rendered MXF files are compatible with HDCAM SR camcorders, VTRs, and SR Memory solid state recording devices.

An enhanced Vegas Pro Explorer now features a Thumbnail View, and supports Windows Libraries including My Songs, My Videos, and My Pictures. With auto-text fill and breadcrumb control similar to Windows Explorer, the user can also navigate to previous directories on the system.

Project media tagging is also new; a Media Tag can be applied to the entire clip or to a region of a clip. As each clip is tagged, it will automatically be organized into Media Bins. Quick Search offers instant filtering of media based on a single text field. The Search Media dialog enables more complex searches using multiple conditions, and makes the bins it creates "smart." Smart Bins update automatically if any media tags are changed or if new media gets added that matches the search criteria.

Thumbnails are now optimized for 16:9, and media that is a different aspect ratio than the project will appear letter-boxed or side-pillared; highlighted clips now offer a more prominent border around the thumbnails. Properties of video clips can be edited for a range of parameters, including field order, pixel aspect ratio, color space, stereoscopic 3D mode and other factors. The user selects two or more video files in the Project Media window and clicks the Media Properties button to edit parameters.

At last year's NAB, Spectral Layers Pro and Sound Forge Pro Mac were shown as technology previews. Released during the year, the software packages were available for purchase at NAB 2013. SpectraLayers Pro is an advanced audio spectrum editor that allows the user to explore audio data on a multi- dimensional spectral display showing time and frequency events. Available for Mac and PC, SpectraLayers Pro offers extreme audio editing; and tools for extraction, modification and creation. It is 32-bit 96 kHz capable and offers a seamless file transfer to Sound Forge Pro and other audio editing programs.

Sound Forge Pro MAC Professional Audio Recording, Editing, and Mastering Software offers a new user interface designed for OS X, access to dedicated viewing panels, and the ability to toggle between features to view only those needed for a specific editing task.

At 64-bit /192 kHz maximum resolution, Sound Forge Pro can record up to 32 simultaneous channels. The package includes the Mastering Effects Bundle by iZotope, a suite of six e audio mastering plug-ins: EQ, Multiband Compressor, Exciter, Imager, Limiter, and Reverb. Three other useful tools are Declicker, which automatically identifies and removes clicks and pops; Denoiser, which eliminates unwanted noise with noiseprint-based noise reduction; and Declipper, which reconstructs peaks damaged by clipping.

Sony Creative Software unveiled a range of crucial updates to all its core products at NAB this year

Sony Creative Software unveiled a range of crucial updates to all its core products at NAB this year. The move to being able to edit 4K natively on the timeline was obviously an important one, given that the industry is moving in this direction so quickly. And the addition of Panasonic's P2 format, for round tripping, is also an acknowledgement of how these cameras are used in the field...and how Vegas Pro 12 is positioned to be an in-field editing solution. Unveiling the production-ready versions of SpectraLayers Pro and Sound Forge Pro made for a well-rounded display of Sony Creative Software's wide-ranging capabilities.

NAB 2013: Bob Zelin: The Evolution & Revolution

Calling Bob Zelin one of the industry's most respected voices of engineering and systems experience is an understatement. (We might also have to add "most feared.") For over 20 years, he has been at the leading edge of building next-generation post houses and broadcast facilities using the latest, greatest, and most affordable new technology. He's also been around long enough to have seen through an awful lot of hype, so when Bob drops the "R" word, it's because he really believes it's revolutionary himself. His coverage of the 2013 NAB Show is once again don't-miss reading.
