In this AE video tutorial, Rob Mize uses After Effects to create a unique customized matte wipe for use in popular editing systems like Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and Avid. Rob uses After Effects' Puppet Tool to animate a bug graphic; then uses CC Particle World to duplicate and control the graphic for the transition.

Great tutorial, if somewhat disgusting. Yew. I like the way it makes the bedbugs look as if they're eating the first clip.

Rob, Thank you for this fantastic tutorial. Not only was this clearly explained but I learned a thing or two about matts and alpha channels. As the David commented above, can this be achieved in Premiere Pro??

David and Tim... Hi Guys….

Sorry for the delay in responding… I've been on the road lately.

This is do-able in Premiere Pro…
Overlap your two video clips on Video Tracks 1 and 2
Add the BugWipe_Matte.mov to Track 3
Add the BugWipe.mov to Track 4
Add the Track Matte Key effect to Track 2 and twirl open the effect.
Select: Matte: Video 3 (BugWipe_Matte.mov)
Composite Matte Luma
Add Luma Key effect to Track 4
Adjust Threshold as necessary (for me about 6%)

Premiere Pro is not my primary edit software, so I invite PP Power Users to weigh in with their more sophisticated advice/techniques on using the alpha channel.

Thanks very much for your interest.

An amazing production.

I really likes the beginning, in the style of a b movie trailer. Is there a tut on preparing the text to overlay? Very impressive, thanks

Hi, Eddie

Glad you liked the trailer, I wasn't sure if the client would approve it, but happily they did… I really enjoyed making it. As far as the "Title Overlays", are you referring to the Text Graphics in the "Trailer"? Those are 3D text layers with a bit of "Wiggle" on them. I got the fonts from: dafont.com a terrific resource for affordable/free fonts.

Right you are, Will... I should have mentioned that so thanks for covering me. I did it that way for those systems that might require a separate Alpha.
I appreciate the response and I'm glad you liked the tut.

Hi - great tutorial. I've been playing with the alpha transitions quite a bit. I've found that if you render out your logo/bug/etc layer with an in-built alpha channel it's not necessary to render a separate alpha pass, so the middle well can stay empty. You just need the main wipe and a matte pass. Hope that's of interest.

Thanks again for a cool tutorial, I think the alpha wipe is pretty powerful.

Very interesting and useful tutorial. However, the resolution of the video is too low, which sometimes makes it difficult to follow the tutorial.

We've increased the size and quality of the video. If the resolution is too large try hitting the full screen button to have it fit to your screen.

Hi, I really enjoyed this tut but I sat through the whole thing and even took notes to find that it works in FCP. How can this be used in Premiere Pro - or can you not do so?

Thanks, David

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

mocha AE Planar Tracker for Absolute Beginners

Want to learn how to create advanced visual effects? Learn how to use mocha AE to track your shot and add advanced visual effects to live action footage inside Adobe After Effects. mocha can help you track shots that would be hard to track using traditional 2D point or feature trackers because it is a PLANAR TRACKER. A planar tracker uses planes and textures to track as opposed to points or groups of pixels. This allows the tracker to stay on track even if your shot contains motion blur or a very shallow depth of field. mocha AE comes included with Adobe After Effects and is available since CS3 and there is no reason for you not to use this awesome tool to make it easier for you to track your shot, replace screens or rotoscope!
