Very useful tutorial. I look forward to more with FCP studio. There's just soo much to the motion application that it's hard to just play around with it. It's too complex for just an average user.

Im having a little trouble here, hopefully someone can help me out. When I get to the stage where I move my explosion group, the particles disappear. They don't show up on the play back at all. Not sure if there is some paramater I am missing or if my motion is just glitching. Any ideas?

I don't know enough about how you built your project to necessarily help you. Check the life parameter for your particles. Particles will "die" based on that parameter so it's possible they aren't living long enough to move.

It could also be an issue with a camera or something else entirely. Did you follow the tutorial precisely?

I dont think its the life of the particle, because no matter what the life time is, it should start where the emitter starts on the time line. I did fallow the tutorial precisely. The particles only show when the emitter is dragged to frame 1. If its at that start position I can scrub through the rest of the frames and see the explosion. But if I move it from that position the particles disappear completely.

Great tutorial, Andy.

The reason the RAM preview doesn't playback at full speed when the emitter or containing layer is selected is that Motion has to draw the bounding box. Which means it has to calculate the bounding box. Which takes some time when you have the random motion of 5000 particles to place.

That's why when you click off the Particle Emitter/Layer, the playback speeds up...

Great, great tutorial. The NULL object really sells the effect.

For my text explosion, I need to do a few things different:
The text that will be exploding is an animation of a countdown timer. When the clock reaches 00:00:00 it will explode. I imagine that will work roughly the same way - BUT I want it to begin to rattle and fall apart (losing just a few pieces) beginning at 00:05. How can that be achieved?

Secondly, instead of it exploding into little spheres, can it explode into pieces (each piece flopping around independently) ? See the video below:

Thanks for this tutorial! I've done similar things, but never with ramping the glow or using a null object with the repel behavior. Those two things really take it to the next level. Thank you.

Great tutorial Andy, many thanks. It's very easy to overlook that you can give emitters (and replicators) a custom shape using the "Image" option.
