Article Focus:
CreativeCOW leader, Mike Gondek examines Photoshop CS3: Photo Effects Cookbook, by Tim Shelbourne and published by O'Reilly Media, Inc. Find out why Mike says, ''...after seeing this book, it has me interested in checking out the rest of the cookbook series from O'Reilly.''

What a great format for a Photoshop book, as easy to follow as a cookbook! Packed with over 50 recipes for creating spectacular special effects using Adobe Photoshop, this book is a must for Photoshop professionals. The book also starts out with a great overview of what is new in Photoshop CS3, just as many cookbooks start out going over the ingredients used throughout the book.

The book is very well organized into chapters of Photoshop effects that belong to a similar topic, much like a cookbook has a chicken, seafood or beef chapter. For example the Natural World Effects chapter shows you how to turn a summer image into an autumn scene, and how to add rain or snow to a digital image. Other chapters show you how to create your own metal, wood, stone, glass, plastic or applying a engulf a saxophone within flames you create yourself from scratch. Even if you may have done some of these special effects on your own, Tim adds a different twist and his techniques are very professional and realistically convincing.

Each chapter is filled with studio level techniques which give you professional results rather than the canned look you get from using a single filter. Packed with hundreds of full-color images, step-by-step instructions, and many practical tips, this book and Adobe Photoshop CS3 are all you need to create professional graphic art effects from almost any image source.

If you would like to try out any of the recipes in this book, you can download the images from a weblink supplied in the book. Readers of all experience levels will like this book.

Final Rating:
After having reviewed many books, this is absolutely one of the best on Photoshop ever. Finally a book that deserves a permanent place on my bookshelf, and I believe it will still be useful many years from now when we are using Photoshop CS10. Photoshop CS3 Photo Effects Cookbook has me interested in checking out the rest of the cookbook series from O’Reilly.

I give 5 cows to Photoshop CS3: Photo Effects Cookbook.
