Article Focus:
David Chandler-Gick takes a look at Scott Kelby's title: 'Macintosh... The Naked Truth' published by New Riders Publishing.

When I was first asked by Ron and Kathlyn to do reviews for CreativeCOW, I had some concerns. For a couple of reasons. First, I'm hardly an "expert" in anything particular. I know a lot of things about a lot of things, some things about a lot more, and nothing about still more.

Second, I didn't want to turn a review into a glorified narcissist-fest. For example, any one who doesn't know who Harry Knowles or Ain't It Cool News are must have been living under a big huge giant gargantuan rock somewhere in the arctic. To me, the AICN website is nothing but an over-glorified narcissistic experiment given credence by the media in general. Reading any of the "reviews" there, you have to muddle beyond the self-congratulatory "prose" that the majority of the writers feel you absolutely, positively, without a doubt cannot live without.

And if you've gotten this far, I'm sure you've got the point by now! Right? This is why www.darkhorizons.com is a much better movie news and rumor site. That's my expert opinion and I'm sticking to it.

My goal has been to do reviews with a 500 word target. Or less.

Scott Kelby, in my opinion, is another narcissist. Anyone who has read his columns in Photoshop User or Mac Design (formerly Mac Today) will know this, I think. But, in a good way. (I can expound on this thought for hours and hours, but then the focus would definitely shift and we'll both forget why we're here.)

His latest title, Macintosh... The Naked Truth is another sampling of "Us versus Them Mac lore", but surprisingly it's far more honest than you might suspect. Not only does Kelby sing the praises of Apple, their Macintosh line of computers, but he also illustrates the bombs and poor business decisions as well. And best of all, he offers plenty of anecdotal evidence to support both.

I couldn't put the damn book down! Even when he blasts the "PC Weenies" I had to turn the page and continue laughing my butt off. (Okay, I admit, I did put the book down. But only 5 times... The fourth being to watch Episode II (Don't get me started on that...))

"Highly recommended. Four and a half Cows ..."

If you are a Mac fanatic, this book is an absolute must read. Period. No discussion, just drop everything and go buy it now.

If you are an open minded PC user, and you are willing to see the light, then Go. Now. Buy. Read. Learn. Realize.

But, if you are a close-minded PC Weenie, and cannot accept the fact that a Mac is simply better than any PC out there, then feel free to have a grand ol' time fixing all the bugs in the next release of Windows.

You know there'll be plenty.

:-)
