, the premier research society in computer science. Game developers often do pioneering studies while developing games i.e., writing new and unique algorithms that may or may not be used for the game they're creating, and SIGGRAPH is a forum to showcase those efforts.

SIGGRAPH 2012 -- Emerging Technologies Media Tour

Similar to a graphics tablet, a ClaytricSurface is able to become 3D. Under a layer of fabric, sand substitutes for the simulated substance of objects which stay in place thanks to pumps underneath that suck the air from the sand. This would be indispensable in recreating a relief map showing accurate surface elevations, with applications in gaming and the military. ClaytricSurface

A glasses-free 3D effect, which is achieved through multiple copies of the each object created via mathematical formula and then superimposed over each other. The MIT submitters describe this as: "a family of compressive light field displays comprising all architectures employing a stack of time-multiplexed, light-attenuating layers illuminated by uniform or directional backlighting (i.e., any low-resolution light field emitter)" -- go figure! Strap the device on your arm and it will send electrical stimuli through your wrist, literally electro-shocking your hand, to make your fingers move. Although not strong enough to allow for extreme muscle tension (say, to grasp something or pick something up), it has been useful in teaching people timing for musical instrument instruction -- as when to precisely pluck a string.

From Disney Research, the new REVEL system uses reverse electrovibration to provide physical objects with virtual textures. By placing your hand on a metal plate on the wall, a gentle electric current flows through your body, interacting with metallic paint on a nearby connected painting, creating the illusion of different textures. The painting feels perfectly smooth the moment your hand is removed from the plate. I already see the possibilities here!

Known as an "Ungrounded haptic rendering device for torque simulation," this specialized racket can render impact forces and twisting torques just like you feel when you're on the court and hit a real tennis ball. I can see this technology applied to guns on a virtual shooting range to simulate kickback.

As well as exhibits and seminars, a total of 91 films were shown during the Festival portion, allowing for interactive sessions and exclusive learning opportunities to gain valuable industry secrets and invaluable advice from some of the most successful and influential professionals in the field today.
SIGGRAPH Real-Time Live!
is the premiere showcase for the latest trends and techniques for exciting new and unique methods of interactive visuals. A series of ten international jury selected submissions were presented in a fast-paced, 90-minute show of cutting-edge, aesthetically stimulating real-time work at SIGGRAPH 2012.
"As the momentum behind real-time photorealism accelerates, Real-Time Live! 2012 presents multiple projects pushing human character performance alongside physically based lighting and shading techniques," said Jason RM Smith, Real-Time Live! Director and Digital Production Supervisor at LucasArts. "The show retains a strong breadth of diversity with breakdowns of an audio-driven procedural graphics engine, an augmented reality gesture-based control solution, proprietary and commercial rendering engines, and a number of unreleased games titles."
The second annual SIGGRAPH Business Symposium was held, featuring keynote speakers Carl Rosendahl, founder of Pacific Data Images, venture capitalist, and co-director of Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center-Silicon Valley, and John Textor, chairman and CEO of Digital Domain Media Group. The objective of the event was to help shape the future direction of the computer graphics industry.
In all, more than 1,200 speakers and contributors participated in the conference through a variety of talks, sessions, panels, papers, presentations, tutorials, and screenings.
It surpassed even SIGGRAPH's expectations and you just wonder whether it will be possible to have a better show in 2013 (Think: Anaheim) ... but we all know they will!
