Article Focus:

In this 5-part tutorial, Motion Graphics Trainer, Dean Velez explores creating complex backgrounds using a Photoshop still with the 3D properties of After Effects. We'll also create high end transitions using path tools and various effects as well as eye catching 2D animation using parented layers and resolving text using the track matte features. In lesson two, we'll begin our animation by creating the 3d Space our spider needs.

.Import the web.psd as a composition

.Double click on the web composition icon

.Change the composition settings to the NTSC D1, 720x486 preset, set the duration to 12:00 and turn on the advanced 3Dsetting if you're not using 6.5

.Switch the quality on all layers to best if you're not using 6.5

.Duplicate the web layer 4x

.Rename the web layers from top to bottom web 1 thru web 5

.Turn on the 3D setting for all web layers

.Select layer new null object

.Switch its quality to best if you're not using 6.5

.Turn on the 3D setting for it

.Parent all web layers to the null object the null layer will control all the web layers

.Set position key frames for the null  IN    X 360  Y 350  Z 500        OUT  X 360  Y 525  Z -1900

.Set rotation key frames for the null object   IN  X -25  Y -25  Z -25       OUT   X 20   Y 30    Z 40

.Select web 2 set a   Z position of 200   a Z rotation of 25   and an opacity of   IN 80   OUT 100

.Select web 3 set a   Z position of 400   a Z rotation of 50   and an opacity of   IN 60   OUT 100

.Select web 4 set a   Z position of 600   a Z rotation of 100   and an opacity of   IN 40   OUT 100

.Select web 5 set a   Z position of 800   a Z rotation of 200   and an opacity of   IN 20   OUT 100

Moving the layers on their Z position and giving them a slight rotation will give them depth

.Go to the beginning of the time line

.Select layer new camera 50mm with the enable depth of field turned on this will blur the webs as they get close to the camera

.Select layer new light and make the light type spot this will darken the outer edges of the web

.Set its position to      X 480       Y 120       Z -1000

.Set the intensity to         IN 50       OUT 200

.Set the cone angle to   IN 50       OUT 100

.Set the cone feather to IN 50       OUT 100

.Rename the web.psd composition to step 1 render out

.Save the file as BW web BKG

.Render the file as BW web BKG, premultiplied with no alpha we need to pre-render the web before adding the next effects or the render time will be quite long

.Import the BW web BKG into your project

.Create a new NTSC D1, 720x486 preset, composition set the duration to 12:00 and name it render out

.Drag the BW web BKG animation into render out

.Switch its quality to best

.Select layer / new / adjustment layer

.Switch its quality to best

.Select effect /  image control / median and set its radius to 20 this will smudge the web to make it look stickier

.Set key frames for the opacity to IN 0  OUT 100 this will slowly ramp up the median effect, this effect snaps to the keyframes so we don't want to keyframe the radius or it will look choppy

.Go to the beginning of the time line

.Select layer / new / adjustment layer

.Switch its quality to best

.Select effect / image control / median and set it to 3 continuing to smudge the web

.Select effect / stylize / glow this will create hot sparkling spots on the web

.Set key frames for the glow threshold    IN 25     6:00  50    OUT  25 this is the amount of light areas the glow will respond to 0 is its highest and 100 is its lowest

.Set key frames for the glow radius          IN 10    6:00   25   OUT  10 this is the amount of blur the glow will have

.Set key frames for the glow intensity      IN  2      6:00    1   OUT   2 this is how bright the glow will be

.Go to the beginning of the time line

.Save file as web BKG

.Render file as web BKG, premultiplied with no alpha
