The 2013 NAB Show promises to be spectacular! One of the things that ensures its enduring legacy are the new companies with their take on technology - some new, some old, some hi-tech some low-tech... but technology, nonetheless. Each NAB Show delivers both wonderment and amazement, and this year is no different. As I looked over the list of new Exhibitors, I couldn't help but to become excited over some of the fresh and innovative ideas they will be presenting!

One of the hottest concerns today is OTT... OTT (or "over-the-top") allows operators to combine traditional pay-TV programming with popular user-generated content websites via the open Internet and an IP-based set-top-box which can support IPTV, video-on-demand (VoD), near VoD, Internet, and OTT video applications. Channels are encoded in IP format and delivered to the TV through a set top box (STB), allowing users to move seamlessly between broadcast, on demand and content from over the open Internet. The delivery of video via the internet directly to user-connected devices allows access to services anywhere, anytime and on any device, and OTT is opening up new opportunities for content owners to deliver great quality user experiences direct from the Internet. ABOX42, one of the new Exhibitors, is a leading manufacturer of OTT and IPTV STBs. Further information is available at www.abox42.com

In this economy, who isn't interested in getting a deal? That's where Allied Broadcast Group comes in. They are a Dealer/Broker of all major lines of broadcast video equipment, specializing in pre-owned equipment with an emphasis on the production truck, satellite truck and outside broadcast markets. They help you acquire the video equipment you need or sell the gear you don't need! They also do equipment appraisals. Why buy new when you can get the same thing used? See more at: http://alliedbroadcastgroup.com/

Then there's Applied Instruments - a manufacturer of RF test and measurement equipment, specializing in RF signal level meters for Satellite, VHF / UHF broadcast, and CATV. Other products include test signal generators (broadband white Gaussian noise and CW), NPR (Noise Power Ratio) testers, switches, attenuators, and amplifiers. Go to: http://www.appliedin.com/

Blue Sky Lightgrid has a mission - to use digital capture and touch-screen lighting formulas into a robotically controlled, automated studio in order to reduce both production cost and time, enhancing existing production efficiency to allow the production of once cost-prohibitive professional visual media content. Check out: www.blueskylightgrid.com.

A new-comer this year - Bobitag offers a multi-screen user the technology that enables any type of screens (from TVs, PCs, PADs to phones) to interwork together and perform a coordinated task or show. They can integrate all of the screens together to form a virtual world and provide a whole new user experience undreamed of before now. Enjoy a true multi-screen video experience with a lot of fun! See more at: www.bobitag.com.

Then there's Condition One - a video technology software company that has developed an immersive video player for iOS devices and the web that allows you to control what you see on the screen when you watch a video. C1 videos allow you to control your viewpoint within a 180° range of motion, simulating an experience as if you were standing inside of a video and looking around. Look at it here: www.conditionone.com.

Time travel a possibility? It is, if you rely on CriticalPast, which offers historic footage and stills from one of the largest stock archives in the world. All licensed royalty-free, worldwide, in perpetuity. With over 57,000 broadcast quality clips and immediate downloads of full-resolution HD and SD masters and time-coded screeners 24-hours-a-day to serve the needs of broadcast news, TV, and film professionals, they are your source for footage of worldwide events, people, and B-roll spanning the 20th century. Sherman, set the Way-Back Machine to: www.CriticalPast.com.

eMotimo LLC has created technology that allows the capture of moving time-lapse and VFX shots faster, easier, and more affordably than ever. eMotimo crafts the highest value motion control pan and tilt heads on the market (for cameras up to 8 lbs). Open source and platform neutral, MoCo products are extremely portable, highly capable, and (according to them) ridiculously simple to use. For ultimate control, see: www.emotimo.com.

A division of BAE Systems, Fairchild Imaging designs high-performance CMOS and CCD image sensors for the professional video, security/surveillance, industrial, medical/scientific and defense markets. I can't wait to see their 60-120 fps, ultra-low noise, single scene high dynamic range sCMOS image sensor for 1080p and 4K professional video camera applications! Peep their offerings at: www.fairchildimaging.com.

This listing is, by no means, comprehensive - I couldn't include ALL the new Exhibitors, only the ones that stood-out to ME. As with every Show, diverse products and exhibits will create different "ooo's" and "ahh's" in each of the many Attendees; I am the same. But I think I have captured the essence of what is to come - and I know that there will be areas of the Show Floor that will cause some "ooo's" and "ahh's" to escape my lips! Since I have been attending, the Show has never ceased to astonish. See you there!!!

The Drive to Create: The Drive: PAC-12 Football

The 25-year career of 16-time Emmy winner Jim Jorden began with NFL Films, and included 7 years creating programs for NASCAR before returning to football. Along the way, he has led the production of 69 new series on 20 networks, winning Emmys for his work as a cameraman, an editor, and an executive producer. He brings every bit of that experience to bear on "The Drive: PAC-12 Football," now in its second season. It's the first show to cover an entire season, week by week, combining the classically cinematic approach Jim took to his work for NFL Films, and the all-access approach he pioneered with his work on Hard Knocks. You won't want to miss this remarkable look at full-contact TV production.
