Simon Ubsdell has been one of the most respected contributors in a number of Creative COW forums, including Apple Final Cut Pro X Techniques, and Apple Motion, where he offered some of the earliest and most practical advice for taking advantage of both of these applications. His ongoing advice is rooted in his own use of them, and skills developed over 25 years in motion graphics, sound design and mixing, music composition, visual effects and compositing, as well as writing, directing and producing.
An exploration of Motion 5's particle systems is just the beginning of Simon's latest lesson. One of the most powerful aspects of Motion workflow he explores is the power of organization. Naming your elements and grouping them to extend their capabilities is the first step. From there, Simon also explores the Motion equivalent of keyframe assitants in Adobe After Effects, which Apple calls behaviors. They let your computer do the heavy lifting for the kinds of nuanced control that would previously have taken many hours to keyframe by hand.
Other ingredients include apply modes, parenting null objects, animating color over the life of particles, and work in 3D space. As always, Simon discusses some of the options that you can explore for customizing the effect yourself.
