In the lead up to Monday's NAB Show kick-off, Avid made announcements early at the second annual Avid Connect conference today. Expanding their Avid Everywhere strategy from multiple angles, Avid introduced a new Interplay media asset management system, a free version of Media Composer, a Avid Artist DNxIO device, and and a solution that brings their popular ISIS shared storage to everyone. The Avid Everywhere vision seeks to help bring content creators and audiences together with widely available, powerful tools.

AVID ISIS 1000
Avid announced the ISIS 1000 shared storage system, evolving their widely used storage solution to integrate with third party systems like Adobe Premiere Pro. The shared storage will start at the lowered price of $17,995 and offers real-time editorial collaboration that was previously only possible with Avid tools like Media Composer and Pro Tools. Chris Gahagan, senior vice president of Products and Technology, added, "To help more independent professionals and boutique post-production facilities participate in the Avid Everywhere ecosystem, we are now delivering the performance, reliability, and scalability of our proven storage suite in a more affordable, easy-to-use system that speeds up editorial efficiency while protecting content creators' valuable media assets."

The ISIS 1000's features include support for up to 4K media, easy setup and management, advanced self-balancing intelligent storage for reliability, and high levels of performance with proprietary technology. The real time collaboration allows up to 24 editors and support staff to access the media at the same time. Starting at 20TB, the ISIS 1000 can be expanded up to 80TB delivering 36 to 144 streams of 50Mbit/sec media.

AVID ARTIST DNxIO
The new hardware I/O device Avid Artist DNxIO, crafted in partnership with Blackmagic Design, is a hardware interface for high resolution video ingest, editing, monitoring and output for Avid products and third party tools like Resolve, Final Cut Pro, and Premiere Pro. the DNxIO allows for the capture, monitoring and output of UltraHD, 2K and 4K media (and HD/SD formats), with capture and playback up to 60 fps available. The device has Quad SDI in and out, HDMI in and out, and analog in and out, component and composite. Audio inputs and outputs include balanced analog audio (4 channels in and out), AES/EBU (2 in, 2 out), inputs for MP3 players and other devices, and a front panel that features a mic input with 48V phantom power and level control with a headphone connection.

DNxIO features a flexible form factor that fits in standard 19-inch equipment racks for easy integration into any workstation or edit bay. The HD display allows editors to monitor media that is being ingested into and outputted from the system, even when the software is not running. Onboard DNxHR encoding is planned as a future upgrade in Q4 2015.

AVID INTERPLAY MAM 5
The new Avid Interplay MAM 5 media asset management system is a scaleable and customizable system appropriate for organizations of all sizes who need to organize their media assets, departmentally or globally, with the potential to grow or shrink as business changes. The Interplay MAM manages any kind of digital content from ingest to delivery, and can also analyze usage and automate processes to save time and money. Content is controlled through Media Central UX, a web-based interface. There is support for any kind of workflow automation, like playout automation or review and approval.

AVID MEDIA COMPOSER FREE VERSION
The upcoming version of Media Composer will include a free version with some limitations, allowing anyone to have access to the same tools used by Hollywood filmmakers, including all of this year's best picture Oscar nominees. This free software joins ProTools First in Avid's movement to make tools available to more people -- in fact, this free version of ProTools is beginning to roll out to more than 70,000 people who pre-registered for it.

Like the free version of ProTools, Media Composer First will have limitations to operability, like a maximum number of projects. These projects will need to be started "in the cloud", and users can work offline after beginning a project, reconnecting to the Internet to update their project after working. Users will also have access to a Marketplace to purchase effects to use in Media Composer First as needed. And this version of Media Composer will not be able to open any projects from the full version of the software.

ADDITIONAL ANNOUNCEMENTS
In the music and audio part of the announcements, Avid introduced a new generation of the Sibelius music composition and notation software, as well as Avid VENUE S6L live sound mixing system. Sibelius introduces affordable licensing and subscription options that give customers greater flexibility in how they acquire and use the software. VENUE's mixing system features a touch-based interface that enables audio professionals to easily handle the largest, most complex tours and events.

Avid also announced new educational initiatives to help instructors and students utilize the company's software and cloud-driven solutions, bringing more choices and flexibility to education institutions and easier paths to upgrade from free version for students, or to gain certifications.
