Fresh off the recent acquisition of Snell by Quantel, both companies are working together -- and apart -- to introduce and refine a broad range of cost-effective and simplified solutions for broadcasters -- from IP (Internet protocol) based broadcast production with a Cisco partnership to high quality video finishing.

High quality color and finishing system Pablo Rio got some major updates for 4K support, including XAVC support (as requested by clients in Japan, for interchange formats for 4K). DCP is also a supported import format as many post houses use DCP for interchanges. ProRes encode will now be included with Pablo Rio, and the software also supports the conform of Avid effects.

Genetic Engineering 2, Quantel's solution for shared storage, will be available soon. Genetic Engineering allows real time access to the same project between suites, so work can be split or moved between rooms and changes can be made literally at the last minute. Genetic Engineering previously supported 4K 10bit with 1155 MB/s per client -- indicative of how quickly everything changes, these numbers have jumped to 6K 16 bit with 2869 MB/s per client. Michael Cioni, CEO of Light Iron said, "We just finished our fourth client supervised 6K DI session." So you might say this has been around a little while.

Quantel's QTube, a "workflow over IP technology which allows ingest, edit, and delivery anywhere, also got some enhancements to flexibility and support updates. "Beyond remote editing," QTube is a link to a flexible production environment. QTube Browser gives everyone with a web browser access to content via QTube -- wherever in the world it is or they are.

Fairlight, a manufacturer of audio post, live and video production solutions, will also have Gateway integration with QTube. The QTube API gives Fairlight audio editing systems instant, real-time access to Quantel video compositions directly within the Fairlight software.

On the Snell side of things, a partnership with Cisco was announced to work together on real time IP-enabled broadcast production. IP infrastructures with off the shelf routers lower the initial investments and scale with bandwidth. These routers are also agnostic -- that is to say, they allow any transport streams and codecs to flow through without needing to change everything as files change. This allows customers to update their hardware instead of replacing altogether, reducing costs over time.

Snell has also introduced a new dynamic pan-and-scan feature as part of their Kahuna 360 production switcher. The Maverik switcher control surface provides broadcasters with the ability to analyze video content and optimize pan-and-scan location on a frame by frame basis, automating the center of interest. One such area of broadcast where this technology is becoming very relevant is live sports, where the game is captured in 4K and broadcast in HD.

With the growth of Adobe products hitting broadcasters' systems for graphics creation, Snell is responding with After Burner, After Effects integration with the automated graphics workflow. Creators can create their graphics in After Effects as usual, then the graphics are scheduled and populated by Snell's Morpheus before they go to air.

Snell also made major updates to their system monitoring and on demand systems, providing the highest quality file conversion with Quasar (a step above Alchemists' file standards conversion), and announcing plans for ICE OD, a completely cloud-based play-out system.

Not having an product overlap between the two companies, Quantel and Snell are now working side by side with their previous roadmaps, and working together when collaboration makes sense. They stress that the acquisition will mean nothing but good things for their clients in terms of support and new stuff -- their collective R&D team is now nearing 160 people. "We didn't just wake up and decide to do this" said Quantel CEO Ray Cross. "We thought a lot about it."

Cross also made a point to remind that in the midst of the 4K conversation that seems to be hitting NAB hard this year, Quantel's switchers already support 4K playout today. And indeed, it seems that Quantel is looking a little more forward with developments in 4K and the cloud. Transmission comes next as Quantel and Snell continue to work together to respond to the broadcasters' demands across the world.

NAB NLEs 2016: The Revolution? No Revolutions!

While the emphasis on "revolutionary" product releases at the annual NAB Show makes for splashy demos, they can sometimes get in the way of what customers really want: improvements to the product that they already have, just making them work better. Lo and behold, that's what we got in 2016! Rock-solid releases long on increased performance, stability, and interoperability. Useful releases? THAT's revolutionary! Join Creative COW's Tim Wilson for a closer look at NLE software in particular, and the ways in which developers are delivering on the promise of truly meaningful releases.

Kylee Peña's NAB 2016 Review: It's The Little Things

This was not an exciting year for the National Association of Broadcasters conference in Las Vegas, says Creative COW Associate Editor Kylee Peña, but that doesn't mean it wasn't important. The “exciting” stuff isn’t what affects post production workflow the most, at least not immediately. Kylee notes that we may not even know NAB 2016's most important announcements for a few more years. After all, it might have been a long time after the introduction of 4K or even HD at NABs past before those mattered to YOU. So as important as NAB is, that's why it's important not to lose sight of the things that matter the other 51 weeks of the year.
