Following the announcement of Vimeo Stock reaching the milestone of 1 million clips in its library since its launch in September 2018, Vimeo today announces Vimeo Stock Essentials, a carefully curated collection of 1000+ clips in a variety of popular categories, now included as part of every annual Vimeo subscription at no additional cost, a value of over $60,000.
“One million clips is a big jump from when we launched six months ago,” says Vimeo VP of Creator Programs and Vimeo Stock, “but the larger point for us is to have a library that makes sense for our customers, so our growth is intentional. It’s a curation-first approach. We don’t want everything on the market. We want the footage we think will resonate, which guides everything we select.”

Vimeo’s highly curated approach to royalty-free footage included Derick (himself a filmmaker) reaching out to some of Vimeo’s most respected members who’d never licensed footage before, to create a truly unique collection.
That includes the selection of over 1000 clips now included as part of Vimeo Stock Essentials. “We’ve included high-demand footage, with an eye to being evergreen, and applicable to a wide variety of projects. Super slo-mo Phantom video, fire and smoke, aerials for places like Los Angeles, Hawaii, New York City, and more – produced by Vimeo creators that we know and trust.”
Accessing Vimeo Essentials is easy. Anyone with a paid annual subscription at any level can search the collection, and any clips that they’d like directly into their Vimeo account for hosting, sharing, and distribution, managed on the same dashboard that members are already using for managing their own files.
Vimeo subscribers also receive 20% discounts on clips that they license outside the Vimeo Essentials collection, which range in price from $79 for non-exclusive HD clips to $500 for exclusive 4K clips. Vimeo Stock Contributors also receive some of the industry’s highest royalties, starting at 60% going to the creator rather than the rates in the 35% range more common.
“We want people to use Vimeo stock, and to think about Vimeo first,” says Derick. “We’re known for the higher quality video, higher quality interaction among members of the community, Staff Picks is established as the home for the highest quality shorts on the internet, so in a way, we have to live up to our own reputation with this initiative.
“It’s how we want to be in the market, period.”
Vimeo’s commitment to high-quality experiences in every direction – for uploaders, for viewers, for stock video contributors and customers – is clearly paying off, as Vimeo recently announced revenue jumped 54 percent in 2018 (to $160 million from $103.3 million the year before) as its subscriber base surpassed 950,000.
Parent company IAC breaking out Vimeo’s numbers in reporting for the first time clearly reflects a combination of pride in the group’s accomplishments and confidence in its ability to drive further growth, but for Derick, it’s much simpler than that: a reflection of content creators embracing Vimeo’s approach to solving their problems. This started from the beginning, with Vimeo’s emphasis on high-quality video playback that emphasized the control of creators over how their footage can be seen (without ads), by whom, and where those files can be embedded (or not).
Derick is quick to point out that Vimeo is less a video platform, though, than a collection of solutions. “For me personally, I want to make sure that people understand that Vimeo has tools to help people with their work. This starts with collaborative review, where you can leave a note anywhere on a video just by clicking on it. It’s super simple, but people often get lost in the production process, in a million Google docs all with different sets of notes. We can help them keep everything in one place.
“We also support multiple versions of a video posted to the same URL, which is another pain point that I experienced in my own life as a filmmaker, and in the production that my team does here at Vimeo.”
Reducing pain points has an increasing area of focus for Vimeo for a while now. At NAB 2018, Vimeo introduced Vimeo OTT, a set of tools enabling the integrated creation of video subscription services that can be deployed through branded apps, channels on platforms like Roku and others, with built-in analytics, marketing, live streaming, payment processing, DRM, advertising, and much more. The idea is to take a tangle of complicated problems, and sort them out with a set of clear solutions in one place.
In February 2019, Vimeo also introduced the ability to send video files of any size. Whether delivering dailies, b-roll, or finished projects, files can get where they need to go, privately and securely. Anyone with a Plus or above membership has a “Send File” icon in the bottom corner of the clip’s thumbnail. Folks at the receiving end are directed to a secure page where they can download the file in whatever quality they’d like.

“At the same time that we’re building these workflow tools and helping be people be smarter about pain pints, we want to be agnostic about destinations,” says Derick. “In the video space, outside of Vimeo, there’s a proprietary approach, but our approach is that we want people to publish to Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, or their own channels, directly from their Vimeo account. We want the video to live where creators want it to live, where it makes the most sense for them.
“So at the same time that we’re building these workflow tools and helping be people be smarter about pain pints, we want to be agnostic about destination. Our approach is somewhat radical that way.
"All of this,” Derick concludes, “is the signal of a company that cares about getting work done.”
